Robby and Mike

We went sight-seeing on the Trans Mountain highway in El Paso, Texas tonight. The scenery could not compete with Robby.

Robby Likes Big Shoes

It's true. Whenever someone leaves their shoes lying on the floor, Robby is right there, stepping into them. He even wears Megan's shoes, which take a bit more work to get into (and it could be dangerous, if Megan is watching).

It's not easy to get around, but it must be fun!

This was too cute to leave out (besides, Robby has his Dad's shoe under his arm!)

A Few Sites on the Way to Texas

Saturday, August 1st we began a LONG drive to Texas. Bruce and I got up at 5:00 AM and "hit road" (Robby's new favorite phrase). First leg: head north from Springville, Utah to pick up Kyle at EFY in Salt Lake City. We met up with him about 7:00 and were headed back south by 7:10. After a quick stop in Provo to get Krispy Kremes and drop off something at Drew's, it was El Paso or bust.

The chosen route went through Monticello, UT. We went a block or two off the main road to see the first smaller temple ever constructed...

The Monticello Utah Temple
Kyle obliged me and made my favorite "picture face."
We went through the corner of Colorado and saw the first of the pointy up formations (fancy geological term). This is called "Chimney Rock" and is found in Montezuma County.
Shiprock is in the northeast corner of New Mexico...and even has a town named after it. We ate lunch at that special Southwest restaurant, "Sonic."

Eastern Washington Wheat Country

After we dropped Kyle off at the Spokane Airport (see previous post), we drove the long way home, through the Palouse. It was a perfect, beautiful day.

These pictures speak for themselves.

Kyle Flying Solo

Kyle is going to EFY in Salt Lake City. Since we couldn't find a ride down, we booked a one-way trip out of Spokane. We found a "Mannie" parking place...second level parking garage, next to the walkway that leads right up to the ticket counter. We probably walked 25 yards from the car to the check-in place.

The bad news: This is the Delta ticket counter line
The good news: Kyle didn't fly Delta, he flew Southwest.
This is the Southwest ticket counter line.I was trying to get Kyle to make his "classic" picture face, but all he would do was put his hand in front of the camera. This shot was taken just before he was able to manhandle my camera.
Kyle is off to meet the nice TSA people.P.S. Kyle has an almost clean bill of health with his broken foot.
His only restrictions: no running or jumping for the next four weeks.

Foot X-rays

Here are the x-rays of Kyle's foot, the classic three views. Click on each picture to zoom in.

Kyle's Broken Foot

He did it! Kyle has an avulsion fraction of the fifth metatarsal. That's a fancy way of saying that he tore a ligament in his foot and when it tore from the pinky toe bone, it took a little piece of bone with it. You know the knobby bone on the outside of your foot about halfway between your little toe and your heel? That's the bone Kyle broke.

The short story is that Kyle was playing soccer, barefooted, and kicked the ball...hard. When the ball hit the inside of his foot, the bone on the outside broke, from the stress on the ligament.

The next day we called the doctor who didn't want to see Kyle until after the x-rays. He called in an order to have the x-rays taken at the outpatient imaging center of the hospital. They said they would send the x-rays to the doctor. Three hours later we called to see what the doctor wanted to do...the hospital hadn't seen the x-rays yet. It turns out the hospital would not send the films to our doctor until their radiologist had read them, then they would send a report (probably NOT the x-rays). The films would be read in about 2 1/2 days. What is this...CANADA???

We told the doctor to just forget about it and then we went to an urgent care center. They have their own x-ray machine. We walked in the door at 3:00 PM and were out at 4:30 with a diagnosis and a referral to an orthopedist for the next morning, and our own set of x-rays to show off to friends. I'm not sure the original x-rays have even been read yet!

Kyle's swollen and bruised foot

The arrows show where his foot is broken
More swelling and discoloration - This might not look too bad, but you have to know, Kyle has very thin feet.

The "Western Walker Boot" that Kyle will be wearing for a long time. See how skinny his other foot is? Question: Do people on the east coast get "Eastern Walking Boots?"
